As another person mentioned – the carbon is actually condensed oil vapors coming from the PCV system. Some folks have installed a vapor “catch can” modification coming off the oil separator / PCV tube to sequester the vapors before they deposit onto the intake valves and ports.

An automobile thatâs operating in a fuel-lean condition operates with the best fuel economy (green line in Fig. 2), but with high levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) that expel through the tailpipe. An automobile in the fuel-rich zone operates with the most power (orange area in Fig. 2). This increase in power produces a high output level of CO and VOC pollutants.
I still don’t think that in terms of absolute numbers of cars/issues that this is on the scale of the things that the domestic manufacturers deal with, but maybe Honda just isn’t used to dealing with this volume of issues and dealers+corporate need to adjust to accommodate this sad new reality.
