With conventional EFI fuel delivery, a tank-mounted pump supplies anywhere from 40 to 80 psi to the injectors at all times. A pressure regulator mounted either to the fuel rail or right at the pump keeps the pressure constant, and any excess pressure is returned to the tank. The thing is the injectors really only need that kind of pressure at wide open throttle; in reality, the injectors might only need 30-40 psi at idle or light throttle to deliver an adequate amount of fuel to the engine.
